Frequently asked questions

Is there a supplies list?

In Get Gouachey I try to use a range of materials to be inclusive of the different supplies that people have, but I’ll do my best to summarize my favorites that I turn to often for the tutorials. Also, each of the lessons lists the exact colors, brushes and paper I’m using so you can prepare in advance.

Brushes

This one is the easiest, I’ve been using the same basic brushes for a few years now- only the earliest Get Gouachey tutorials have a few different ones.

I use Kingart Original Gold Series, and my favorites are:

  • 1/2” angled shader

  • size 8 filbert

  • size 4 round

  • size 2 liner

  • recently I’ve been enjoying their size 6 round petal brush for painting planty details too.

I find this selection of shapes and sizes covers 98% of my painting needs. And when you’re looking for brushes, choose ones designed for acrylic paints- they make it easier to control the water content of the paint and are a little firmer and easier to control.

I also like to use a small fluffy mop brush for blending. This can be an artists brush or a small fluffy eyeshadow blender.

Paints

If you’re starting from scratch I always recommend the Winsor & Newton 6 piece mixing set. It has a great selection of colors to get you started and the paint is great quality. But if you wanted to expand your set further there’s a few other colors I love to use in my work:

Winsor & Newton colors

  • Cobalt turquoise light

  • Prussian blue

  • Opera rose

  • Brilliant purple

  • Winsor Green (or Phthalocyanine Green from M. Graham)

M. Graham colors

  • Phthalocyanine green (or Winsor Green from Winsor & Newton)

  • Payne’s gray (I often use this instead of black just as a personal preference)

  • Burnt sienna

  • Yellow ochre

The most cost effective way to get a wide range of colors is to get a small set like the Arteza or the Himi jelly gouache, and these are both nice paints to use. I would always recommend buying the best quality paints that you can afford, but I painted with the Arteza set for the first year of using gouache, so if that’s what you can afford you can still make great art!

Paper

I sometimes paint in sketchbooks and sometimes on loose paper. If the tutorial gets better results on a cotton paper, this is always noted in the lesson information so you can decide what you want to use.

I like my Etchr cotton sketchbooks, and also my Hahnemuhle watercolor sketchbooks (I have a cotton and a non-cotton from these and love them both). Hahnemuhle also do a Bamboo mixed media paper that I love.

My preference is for a cold pressed paper at least 200gsm, and I love to paint on a cotton surface. This isn’t essential, but techniques such as layering and blending can be much easier on a cotton paper.

I'm new to gouache, where do I start?

If you're new to gouache, then Gouache Boot Camp is the perfect place to begin. It covers all the basic techniques you'll need to work with gouache and has exercises and additional tutorial recommendations for you to try out.

What happens each month?

New Tutorials!
The 1st day of the month is always my favorite! This is when the new tutorials will become available, along with the new painting challenge and the gallery of beautiful artwork painted by members within the past month.

I’ll share a post in the community page with a little bit of info about the months theme and handy links to all the new content. You’ll also be able to find the newest tutorials right at the top of the products page.

The Gallery
The gallery is a great place to get inspired, and each month there is a lovely combination of old and new tutorials that your fellow members have painted and shared with the group.

If you would like to have your artwork included in the monthly gallery, just share your paintings on the community page at any time throughout the month.

You can view the gallery for previous months in the Gallery tab in the community.

A Monthly Challenge
Each month I share a challenge for you to complete with your gouache. This might be to only use a single brush, focus on a specific color, or to create a scene that includes specific elements. The challenges are a fun way to explore your paints, and your participation is completely optional.

If you give the challenge a go and would like to share your work for inclusion in the gallery, just share it in a post in the community before the end of the month.

Live Classes
There is a live class each month where we paint from a reference photograph. Joining this class is a great way to develop your skills and you're welcome to ask questions as we paint.

I share the date and time, along with the link, in the Live Classes tab in the community.

Don't worry if you cant make the live class, the replay will be available to watch at your convenience, along with all past live class replays.

How do I find the newest tutorials?

At the top of the page you’ll see a link that says ‘This Month’. Here you’ll find the newest tutorials, links to this months challenge, and the date for the next live class.

How do I browse through all the tutorials?

Click on ‘Tutorial Library’ at the top of the page to browse through all the projects available within Get Gouachey.

How do I add a photo to the community page?

You can add text, photos and videos to the community page following these simple steps:

1. Click on New Post at the top of the community feed.

2. Add a title to your post at the very top...

Underneath that is an option for adding a video and video thumbnail. You are welcome to add a video- but if you want to add a photo, then you can just ignore these.

The content box is where you'll add your text, and then when you want to add a picture use the forward slash key (this one: / ) to bring up the menu. Click on Image at the top of the menu.

Select Choose file to pick the photo you want to share in your post, and once it has uploaded you can click Insert to add it.

You'll see your image appear in your post with your text.

3. When you have written your post you'll need to click on the Choose topic button and select Member Posts. When you've done this, click Done and select Publish now.

How do I receive/change email notifications?

On the community page, click on All Topics on the left side. Click the little bell icon to see/change your notification settings.

I recommend having the 'New Post' notification turned on for the Live Classes and the In the Studio topics.

When is this months live class?

The date/time for the live classes changes each month. Once I have scheduled the class, you'll find it in the Live Classes tab on the community page.

Where are the Live Class replays?

The Live Classes have their own course on the Products page where you'll find all the replays for previous classes.

Click on Products at the top right of the page and scroll down to Live Classes, or use the search option to bring it up.

How do I cancel my subscription?

NOTE: If you joined through Patreon, please cancel through the Patreon website.

To cancel your Get Gouachey subscription, go to the top right menu and select settings. Scroll down to where it says billing, and next to Community click edit. Scroll down and select Cancel Plan.

This will not affect other items you may have purchased or signed up for separately, such as the Gouache Guides or Gouache Boot Camp. You'll still find these in your Products tab at the top of the page.
